Studying can be a very tedious task. Often you may feel that your methods are not showing the results you hoped for. Not to worry. We have outlined 7 ways to effectively focus your attention and increase positive outcomes. 

1.            Listen to Music

Music is a universal connector. You can use it to strengthen connections to not only other people but to your studies as well. While some people need absolute silence to concentrate, some studies show that music can enhance your ability to comprehend information. Of course, screamo and heavy metal songs are not quite what we are talking about. Songs from old school and obscure composers, and even The Beatles, are demonstrated to help students engage the parts of the brain that allow them to be more attentive and make predictions. Listening to music while studying can also lift your mood and mindset!

2.            Exercise

Exercise is an excellent way to boost your brainpower! According to health, fitness, and psychology experts, working out pumps nutrients and oxygen directly to your brain. You will become more alert and manage to process information more easily. So, go out for a run, stretch your muscles, or take a walk.

3.            Change Locations

Believe it or not, WHERE you study can directly affect the effectiveness of your concentration and retention. For example, if you study in a closed-off room surrounded by clutter, it is more difficult to focus. Do not study somewhere that is a source of stress. Try moving outside to a park or even another room in your home. It won’t take long for you to notice a difference.

4.            Take Practice Exams

Perfect practice makes perfect. Most of the time, practice tests or quizzes are made available before a final exam. Take advantage of this! If one is not available, make one from the materials yourself. Try to use wording similar to the information provided. The more you go over your materials, the more instilled in your mind it becomes. In 2011, a study demonstrated that students who took a pre-test retained 50% more information than their peers (who did not). Be empowered to ask your instructor for practice test material if it is not provided. Ultimately, your success is up to you.

5.            Become A Teacher

Recalling information will be a whole lot easier when you have the expectation that you need to teach it to someone else. You look at the info you have in a new light. Imagine having to describe a topic in multiple different ways for those who do not initially understand. Research backs this method. You will begin to organize your thoughts and notes more efficiently when taking on a teacher role.

6.            Quit Multitasking

Multitasking does NOT contribute to effective results when studying. Generally, it adds time to your studies, dragging this task out, and forms poor habits. Concentrate on the task at hand and move on to other distractions after. Researchers agree that multitasking may end up damaging your grades and goals at hand.

7.            Over-Focusing

Studying or memorizing one topic for too long is not helping you. You may start to feel burned out. Try giving yourself a time limit for each subject or switch between related subjects. Stay calm and have trust in yourself that you WILL get the material down. Make sure you give yourself enough time to plan your study session. Cramming the last minute before the test will only make things harder. Reading your notes over before the exam is, however, a great way to refresh after your comprehensive study session.
